This was a review of 1334 from 2007 and it is still relevant after all these years. If you are ever in Australia come and visit us. DEATHROCK DOWN UNDER A look at Australian Deathrock Scene of Melbournes 1334 By Djpoisondwarf, Miss Rachael (1334) and Susan (Ghoul from Sydney Town) 1334 – AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER DEATHROCK & OLD SCHOOL GOTH PARTY Think Deathrock/Old School Goth - think Melbourne and 1334! On September 14th 2007 I travelled down to Melbourne from Sydney to discover what a memorable club 1334 is. You enter the club and you feel right at home from all the wonderful sounds of Deathrock/Traditional Goth music that is indeed “keeping it real” and I certainly didn’t want the experience to end that evening! Djpoisondwarf and his lovely wife Miss Rachael who run the club made me feel like part of the Deathrock/Trad Goth family. I instantly made friends and every song that was played was perfect! Hardly time for a toilet or drink break. I must have danced for 5 hours straight and that must be proof of a club worth visiting! 1334 and their club before Kiss Kiss Bang Bang started as a reaction against EBM. Going back 3 years ago they had lost all of their old Deathrock and Trad Goth djs, they went into hiding as the state of the music scene was awful. The punters only wanted to hear music that was either techno based or Nu Metal. 1334 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang have a policy NO EBM, NO NU METAL AND NO 80S NEW ROMANTIC! They have now built up a reputation now that puts them one step above generic based Goth clubs due to that policy. The general club punters are all different styles of people that turn up too. They could range from Deathrockers, Old School Goth Types, Punks and Goths that are sick of hearing EBM in clubs. Djpoisondwarf mentioned that someone in the street came up to him the other day and said…….. “Awesome night on Friday night (the night of 1334). I had a great time! You just dont get enough Goth Rock out at clubs these days.” It is feed back like that which makes it all worth while for Djpoisondwarf, Miss Rachael and all the Dj’s that play on the night. 1334 is at CBD Nightclub in 12 McKillop St, Melbourne, Australia. It starts at Midnight and goes till late. They are on usually the second Saturday of each month, but you will have to check them out at Club 1334 for exact dates. Entry to the club is $10 and $8 for members. They dont do theme nights anymore as they believe it limits the people coming. 1334 attract a very good looking, well dressed group of people and due to that theme nights arent required. The music style played is Deathrock, Old School Goth, they also play some Horror Punk and Psychobilly for good measure. I was talking to Djpoisondwarf and asking what are the special moments of the club that are memorable are and he replied……….. “Having people dance to Deathrock and Old School Goth is a special moment for me. Having people come up and request bands like Tragic Black, Specimen, Bauhaus, Cinema Strange also makes me think that we are doing a good job.” During the evening their Djs have half their sets, as they specialize in different fields and it mixes all the styles as mentioned above more. They might have 3 half our sets during the night. Future plans for the club is to keep spreading the good word that Deathrock and Trad Goth should become a major importance to our scene! Alot of “baby bats” are getting into Deathrock as well they are finding alot of older people coming out of the woodwork and that are clubbing again after going into hiding due to the awful music being played in the other clubs. As part of the club, 1334 have released a Street Zine magazine like done during the 80’s and 90’s, it’s called Music Your Grandparents Can Dance To. A street style magazine that focuses on anything Deathrock or Trad Goth related. They have interviews with International and Local bands, DIY Fashion Tips, Hair Tips articles about the History of Goth and Halloween information. I asked Djpoisondwarf more about the Zine and why he brought it out……”As we live in a world that is very fast paced and sometimes people can’t be bothered to click on a link about Deathrock or Trad Goth, so what the Zine does is bring it to the people and hopefully will educate them about the style of music that we play and so love. I came up with a saying Music, Fashion...Deathrock...I think that suits our Zine and 1334.”
