Friends of mine, especially male friends, who also are fathers of girls, Teach your daughters how to fix, and build, anything that you can. You guys know I build. You know Im the fixer-upper in the family. I got that way because my grandfather thought it was a good idea to teach me how to use a screwdriver when I was about 5. Then a hammer. Then a wrench. Then how to properly oil a hinge. Then how to hang a picture. Then how to strip a wire. As a result, Im the Ms. Fix-It of my family, and I have strength out the wazoo (which some of you know firsthand!) because from an early age, I was the one who built furniture in my house, and it shows. Teach your daughters how to use tools, how to put furniture together, how to fix a sink leak, how to snake a drain, how to connect wiring, and what circuitry is all about. Teach her anything that you think the man in her life may or may not know. Why? Simple: there may be no man. Or the man is useless. Or the man gets injured. Or the man would just plain refuse to help or fix or build when its necessary. Teach your daughters to work, build, and fix things with their hands, just as a man would, so that this way, there is no question or doubt that she will take care of herself, by herself, regardless of any man who may or may not enter her life later. And who knows: she may late use those same skills to take care of you. Sincerely, A granddaughter of a man who thought that a girl shouldnt need to depend on a man.
