This was a video taken during an open dialogue last night on Saint Louis University campus. These protestors have come to our private institution and have begun to camp in the center of our campus. The protestors claim to be peaceful, however when we watch videos like this where emotions are unable to be controlled, it causes the students of Saint Louis University to feel threatened. During an open dialogue, where protestors are attempting to make a point and educate, it is obscene and disrespectful to swear or cuss every other word indirectly at students in which you are trying to educate. It is very clear that a peaceful protest can turn violent at any moment and when students of the university, parents, family or any other random person sees these types of videos, it begins to cause fear around our campus. While searching through the videos and pictures that have been posted all over social media, the comments sections are filled with concern; there are parents who will no longer consider Saint Louis University a university their children can attend. Fear and concern should not be what is being instilled in others minds. You are able to find more videos on ustream.tv/recorded/53964617 In the video that this second link takes you to, you are able to see more emotional instability even towards a person who is showing support for their cause. This takes place around the 14:00 mark where a student is talking about patience. There have been multiple people who have been told to walk away before they get hurt when walking towards the upside hanging American flag which is another story in itself. The conversations are one sided to a point where if any person disagrees, they become surrounded and unable to get their two cents in. There has to be a time where Saint Louis University sees that there is a possibility for this peaceful protest to turn in the wrong direction. Emotions are clearly unable to be controlled. Emotional intelligence is extremely important in these types of situations where a group is attempting to educate and it is not being shown here. Saint Louis University is a Jesuit institution where we take an oath of inclusion our freshmen year, but there comes a time where a line has been crossed. We are stepping close to that line and it will not be a pretty site if it gets crossed soon.
