This was an absolute shocking match! Croatia didn’t exist as a nation as recently as the 1990 World Cup, and weren’t able to form a soccer federation in time to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. But a lack of history has proved no hindrance to perhaps the darkest of horses in World Cup history. The Germans were the obvious favourites in this match. Germany dominated the first 40 minutes in much the same fashion it did in its earlier matches, controlling the ball, winning every tackle, firing off several shots at Ladic. The game turned in the 40th minute, when German defender Christian Woerns, one of the team’s best performers in this World Cup, was sent off by Norwegian referee Rune Pederson for a late tackle on Suker. It appeared to be a close call, but a good one. One man down and it was expected that the fighting spirit of the Germans would show-up but instead, they got dismantled. Croatia simply made the Germans reel. Three goals were scored and the Germans couldn’t score any as the European champions were out of the World Cup in the most disgraceful manner. Croatia created history.
