Mrs. Raymond Swaney, club president, presided at a business session. Roll call responses were current events. Year books were distributed. The club voted to make a contribution to the “March of Dimes” fund. A social time was spent in games with Mrs. Grant Powell winning the contest prize. Lunch was served. The Fidelity Class” of the Sixth Street Baptist Church met Friday night in the church basement with Mrs. Ollie Badgerow , Mrs. George Cantrell, Mrs. Lutie Carter and Mrs. W.H. Cockrum as hostesses. Mrs. John Newcomer, new president, conducted the meeting. Scripture reading was led my Mrs. Viola Scott followed by prayer by Mrs. Lillie Pollard. Each member answered to roll call with a scripture verse. A business session was held and the group voted to send Bibles to Korea. Secret pal gifts were exchanged. Mrs. John Simon was in charge of the social period. Mrs. Harl Boswell read the Scripture lesson which was followed by prayer by Mrs. B. E. Wantland. Mrs. Helen Stone, program leader, gave several interesting readings. Refreshments wee served to Mrs. Lillie Walker, Mrs. Irene Howell, Mrs. Ed Tollman, Mrs. Earl Breden, Mrs. Raymond Williams, Mrs. Raymond Shryock, Mrs. S.B. Simmons, Mrs. Stone, Mrs. Jim Myers. The “Alpha Delta Kappa National Teachers’ Society met Thursday night in the home of Mrs. Maxine Holman in Columbus, with Mrs. Gladys Harrison as co-hostess. Following a business session, a candle-lighting ceremony was held for the new pledges. They are Mrs. Viola Scott of Galena, and Mrs. Faye Westervelt of Columbus. Those present were Mrs. Dorothea Davis, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Norma Thompson, Mrs. Cecile Largent, Mrs. Nina Sawyer, Mrs. Irene Waltman and Miss Josephine Lloyd of Galena, Mrs. Ethel Jones, Mrs. Donna martin, Mrs. Marie Potter, Mrs. Faye Westervelt, Mrs. O’Dell Mitchell and misses Myrtle White and Marie Heinrichsmeur of Columbus and the hostesses. “Joplin Globe” - January 17, 1954 “The Ladies Auxiliary” of the “First Baptist Church” held an all-day meeting Thursday in the church basement. A Covered-dish luncheon was served at noon and the day was spent quilting. Those present were Mrs. Everett Wade, Mrs. Harold French, Jr, and children, Mrs. Oral Wade, Mrs. Faith Lewman, Mrs. David Davis, Mrs. Ruth Hardy, Mrs. Charles porter, Mrs. Wade Tennis, Mrs. Olin Wade, Mrs. Doyle Messenger, Mrs. Maggie Wade, Mrs. Frank Dillon, and Miss Kay Davis. Elder Ernest Davis was a guest at the luncheon. Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Owens, 916 Elm Street, announces the marriage of their daughter, Clair Jean to Herbert R. Harris, of Galena, formerly of Joplin. He is the son of Mrs. Blanche Harris. The candlelight service was held at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 3, in the Methodist church. The double ring ceremony was read by the Rev. J.H. Thornberry. Preceding the ceremony, Max Byrd played “Salute D Armour” And “Oh Thou Sublime”, , Sweet Evening Star. Max Byrd sang “I’ll Walk Behind You” and “Vision”, accompanied by J.F. Byrd, music for the ceremony, played by Mr. Byrd, included the Lohengrin bridal chorus, Praeludium 1 and the Mubdelssohn wedding march. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a ballerina-length dress of iridescent dusty rose taffeta with navy blue accessories. She carried a white Bible with a purple orchid tied with satin streamers. Miss Pat Arnold, the brides attendant, wore a gown of teal blue taffeta with white accessories. Robert Turner of Joplin was best man. A reception was held at the Harris home, 1906 Main Street, following the ceremony, Mrs. Kathryn Myers of Joplin was in charge of the guest book. Following the reception the couple left for a honeymoon trip to Kansas City. They Will reside 1906 Main Street. Joplin Globe” - October 10, 1954 The Sunshine Circle of the Christian” church met Thursday afternoon at the church with Mrs. Raymond Williams, Mrs. Raymond Shryock and Mrs. John Chase as hostesses. Mrs. Helen Stone read the scripture lesson and the “Lords Prayer” was recited in unison. Roll call responses were short poems from memory. A contest was conducted by Mrs. Donald Rataczak and Mr. Arnold Rataczak . Refreshments were served. Mrs. Miles Landis entertained members of her contact club with a 1 o’clock luncheon Tuesday at “Wilders” in Joplin. Contact was played following the luncheon at which high scores were won by Mrs. Leo Dobbin of Baxter Springs and Mrs. Carl Graham of Joplin. Present were Mrs. William Replinger of Joplin, Mrs. Graham of Joplin, Mrs. C.H. Capeli, Mrs. Warren Harold and Mrs. Harry Robeson of Galena, and Mrs. Landis of Baxter Springs. Members and Mrs. Dobbin and Mrs. Wilmer Ingram of Baxter Springs, guests. The club will meet in two weeks with Mrs. Robeson as hostess. The “Loyal Workers” Class of the Methodist church held a dinner Monday night in the home of Mrs. Chester Kibler. A social period followed and secret pal gifts were exchanged. Those present were Mrs. Wade Weston, Mrs. William Poteet and daughter, Reva Kay, Mrs. Charles Roberts, Mrs. Lee Harreld, Mrs. Guy Flora, Mrs. Gerald Anderson, Mrs. Ardath Link, Mrs. Marie Lusk, and Mrs. Kibler The Reciprocity Club met Wednesday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Robert Wantland, in absence of the president, Mrs. R.G. Powell, Mrs. Carson Bates presided over the business session. A “White Elephant” was held after which the time was spent socially. Refreshments were served to Mrs. C.V. Board, Mrs. B.E. Wantland, Mrs. Jack Deardoff, Mrs. Wil Walker, Mrs. F.K. Pontious, Mrs. Bates, Mrs. S.B. Simmons, and Mrs. Robert Wantland, members. And Mrs. Emily Moore, a guest. Four Children were also present. The club will meet October 30 with Mrs. Walker as hostess. Chapter AB, P.E.O. Sisterhood Held its opening Fall Meeting Thursday night in the home of Misses Merceline and Aletha Moeller, Third and Joplin Streets. A study of the constitution , Kansas State Bylaws, and standing rules was conducted by Miss Aletha Moeller. A paper on the “Ideals of P.E.O.” was given by Mrs. Max Y. Sawyer. Following a brief business session, a social evening was enjoyed and refreshments were served to Mrs. Harry Abbey, Mrs. Ralph Baker, Mrs. H.A. Browne, Mrs. S.B. Stephenson, Mrs. Elmer Fox, Mrs. Board, Mrs. F.J. Byrd, Mrs. Mary Stone, Mrs. Alma Boyd, Mrs. A. E. Clark, Mrs. Amy Seiler, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Ethel Anderson, Mrs. R.H. Joplin Globe” - February 14, 1954 The “CIO Club” was entertained Tuesday night in the home of Miss Marceline Moeller, 301 Joplin Street. Roll call was answered by a valentine exchange with each member reading a valentine verse. A miscellaneous program on “Science” was held. Members prepared candy and cookies to be sent to the three nursing homes in Galena. A social period followed and refreshments were served to Mrs. Harry Abbey, Mrs. W. A. Stone, Mrs. Norma Thompson, Mrs. Raymond Swaney, Mrs. Earl Neeley, Mrs. Twyla hedges, Mrs. Nellie Henderson, and Misses Julia Hunter, Josephine Lloyd, Marceline and Aletha Moeller. The club will meet February 23 with Miss Julia Hunter as hostess. The Women’s Council of the first Presbyterian Church Held a business meeting Wednesday afternoon at the church. A Commentary “ Madame Chairman” was read to Mrs. DeVaughn Riley. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. Warren Stringer and the treasurer’s report was given by Mrs. Howard Ellington. The following committee reports were given; Mrs. Bessie Wiley, fellowship; Miss Winona Willis courtesy and stewardship; Mrs. Howard Ellington, finance. It was voted to table the overseas clothing project for the time being. Mrs. Riley presented literature on two meetings of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. to be held within the next three months, including the quadrennial meeting to be held from June 1-7 at “Purdue University”, Lafayette, IN and the Presbyterial meeting to be held at Fort Scott, April 27 and 28. The next meeting of the woman’s council will be held in the home of Mrs. Harold Herrelson. The Ladies Auxiliary of the First Baptist Church held an “all day quilting” Thursday in the church basement. A covered dish was served at noon. The lesson study was led by Mrs. Wade Tennis, Mrs. Darrell Davis gave the opening prayer. Present were Mrs. Ruth Hardy, Mrs. Willard McMamara, Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Tennis, Mrs. Neal Wade, and children, Mrs. Harold French, Jr. and Children, Mrs. Mary Stansberry, Mrs. Frank Dillon, Mrs. Maggie Wade, Mrs. Olin Wade, Mrs. Haven Lewman, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Everett Wade, and Mrs. Oral Wade. Joplin Globe” - February 14, 1954 Chi Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, National Teachers Sorority held a formal dinner partying the “Colonial Room at the Connor Hotel in Joplin” Thursday night. Table decorations carried out the valentine theme. Silk valentine sachet favors were at each place of the table, at one end of the banquet room, the table was covered with a lace tablecloth and had a centerpiece of gold chrysanthemums flanked by green tapers and the sorority letters and emblem. Following the dinner, initiation ceremonies were held for two new members, Violet Scott of Galena and Faye Westervelt of Columbus. The Initiation ceremony was conducted by Dorothea Davis, president; Donna Martin, vice president; Ester Sowder, chaplain, and Cecile Largent, historian. Mrs. Davis presented at a short business session following the ceremonies. A bulletin from Marie Neal, state secretary of the sorority, was read to the members. Miss Josephine Lloyd gave a report of her trip to Tulsa, January 9, at which time she assisted in the initiation ceremonies held at the “Mayo Hotel” there for the new Oklahoma Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. The remainder of the evening was spent socially. Those present were Maxine Holman, Marie Potter, Marie Heinrichsmeier, Donna Martin, Faye Westervelt, and Myrtle White, of Columbus; Dorothea Davis, Josephine Lloyd, Esther Sowder, Norma Thompson, Cecile Largent, Viola Scott, Ena Brown and Irene Waltman of Galena. Hostesses at the party were Dorothea Davis and Josephine Lloyd. The Builders Class of Spring Grove Sunday School met Wednesday night in the home of Mrs. Agnes Kent for a valentine party. Mrs. Colleen Frazier was co-hostess. “Secret pal gifts” and valentines were exchanged. Songs were song and a Bible reading was held after which games were played. Refreshments were served to Mrs. Dana Webb, Mrs. Audrey Henderson, Mrs. Nadine Swagger, Mrs. Irene Hollis, Mrs. Rosalie Rogers, Mrs. Marie Rogers, Mrs. Helen Collins, Mrs. Eloise Wright, Mrs. Geraldine Olds, Mrs. Rayma France, Mrs. Velma Stewart, Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Frazier and Misses Jeanie Sears, Roberta Rogers, and several children. The leaders Class of the Methodist Church had a valentine party Thursday afternoon in the home of Mrs. George Parks, 1524 Main Street. Mrs. C.V. Board, teacher conducted the devotionals. Valentine were exchanged and games were played with the prize being won by Mrs. James Bullock, Mrs. Board, and Mrs. Ralph Bradford. Mrs. Mary Andrews was in charge of the program. Refreshments were served to Mrs. Bullock, Mrs. Mary Stone, Mrs. Bond, Mrs. Frank Wheelen, Mrs. H.R. Dorman, Mrs. Bradford, Mrs. C.R. Dale, Mrs. Parks, and Misses Mary Andrews and Virginia Wiley. The class will meet March 11at the Methodist church parlors with Mrs. Bradford and Mrs. Dale as hostesses. Mrs. Lillie Pollard was Scripture reader and the closing prayer was given by Mrs. Flossie Lankford. A collection was taken to purchase “Bibles” to be sent to Korea. The class sent cookies, candy, and valentines to shut-ins at the “Owens Nursing Home” Present were Mrs. Loretta Owens and Mrs. Guy Bray, guests; Mrs. Gertrude Malcolm, Mrs. James Shaw, and granddaughter, Elesa Kitch, Mrs. David Shaw, Mrs. Lankford, Mrs. Homer Peek, Mrs. Rheumah Overstreet, Mrs. Pollard, Mrs. Mary Downing, Mrs. Louisa Atkinson, Mrs. Roy Hatfield, Mrs. Leta Turner, Mrs. Edith Smith, Mrs. George Wallace, Mrs. Pearl Woods, Mrs. Newcomer, Mrs. Hutto, Mrs. W.H. Cockrum, Mrs. Mathews, Mrs. Kohl and Miss Irene Barns. The class will meet the second Friday of each month instead of Thursday. Mrs. Will Walker was Hostess for the “Home Emblem Club” Friday afternoon in her home, 917 Wall Street. Hyacinths and Azaleas, potted plants, were floral decorations. Roll call responses wee something of interest regarding the life of “Abraham Lincoln”. A poem “The Once Over” was read by Mrs. Vernon Scott of Joplin. The afternoon was spent socially. Games and contest were diversions. Mrs. Barney Bliss was prize winner. The club will meet February 26 with Mrs. Stringer. The Ladies Service Class of the Methodist Church met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Clyde Gilstrap. Games wee played after which refreshments were served to Mrs. Cecil Robertson, Mrs. Miles Dugan, Mrs. Carl Virgien, Mrs. Henry Smith, Mrs. Harry Reeves, Mrs. Darrell Hilton, Mrs. Robert Summers, Mrs. Roger Swaney, Mrs. DeGraff, Mrs. Lloyd Kitch and Mrs. Gilstrap.
