This was submitted to the P&D and Springfield paper by my son and his family, not sure if they will print it but I hope they do. I cant believe a cop can just dump a dog like that. Sad, very sad. And Duke has yet to come home. By the way, more has happened since this was written. One thing, the cop is now making allegations that Duke was flea and tick infected. Is he grasping at straws trying to justify his actions? I would say so. {Small towns are supposed to have a sense of community and caring for one another that the big cities do not have. My family which consists of 4 kids, 4 dogs, and 3 cats were looking for just that. But its not what we got. A couple of days ago our dog Duke got away from the house and was picked up by the town cop. He began to drive Duke to the police boarding house where they take strays when he got a call about a calf loose in town. Instead of driving the last mile to take my dog where I can claim him, the officer turned around, drove down to the campground near the Marina and just dumped Duke off. Our dog, who has been a member of our family, all of the kids lives, has not been seen since. While we search we find out the officers story and are dumbfounded by the cruelty he showed our dog. When the cop came over to explain what he did, we asked why he would do something like that and not give us the right to pay the fine and get our family member back. He said the calf was more important. He said this in front of our kids. When I told the officer I would get a lawyer, I was threatened with false charges of swearing at local kids and threatening a city council member. The message was clear that if I kept making waves about our beloved family pet, my life in this small town would become much more difficult. By speaking with the citys finance office, we have learned the officer did not follow town procedure by calling in Dukes description to them to try to identify Dukes owners. And he certainly never told them about displacing him so cruelly to an unfamiliar wooded area. It is appearing to us, that this, our dog being dumped off, is punishment for an earlier incident when I had told my kids they could not play with a group of kids that were being snotty and mean to them. I learned the identity of some of those kids when a town council man blocked me from leaving my driveway a couple days later with false accusations that I had sworn at his grand kids. That simply did not happen. I did however, suggest that the man get out of his car to settle the matter when he wouldnt believe the truth nor move his vehicle. Now, days later, our dog Duke is missing, the false allegation that I swore at some rude kids has grown into a wild insane allegation that is too disgusting to bare repeating. I have never in my life suffered such a defamation of character as the Springfield cop has spread about me to other law enforcement officers in the area. If anyone has any information concerning the location or fate of Duke, please let us know. We are heartbroken envisioning him out wandering around in the cold, wet weather, lost and confused & missing his family as much as we miss him.}
