This was written by a few students that are currently attending Kurri Kurri High School, and as a past student that has been through plenty of issues myself I needed to help this situation. No I am not going to say who has said this, and in advanced to people commenting on this I do not care about your negative or destructives comments in regards to this post because if this situation arises YOU are being the bully. I do believe that each and every person has a right to their own opinion but look at the majority of numbers in regards to these situations, there has been a maximum of 25 posts from students at the school in regards to bullying, whereas the school has over 700 students! YOU ARE IGNORING THE MAJORITY AND TAKING THE SIDE OF THE MINORITY! Here is what the students wrote. Number 1) People may have bad experiences and you may not feel like the school has done enough to deal with physical bullying but there is only so much that they can do that is within their legal boundaries. At Kurri Kurri High School there is an extensive support network with counsellors, anti-racism officers and so many more things put in place to benefit the students. A lot of the complaints that have been made on this page are false, slanderous and defamatory. The vast majority of staff are professional and know how to enact and provide a safe learning environment for their pupils. The reason that this kind of violence and bullying is brought about is because of parents encouraging their children to not take anyones shit and to resort to violence. If you want something to be done about bullying within schools then you should teach your child/children how to conduct themselves. I know a lot of the students on here who are claiming to get bullied are also students who bully others; I am not naming names or pointing fingers but you cant expect the school to be able to magically fix problems that are influence by the childs first teachers; their parents. Kurri Kurri High School has provided me, along with all other students, the opportunity to make something of themselves. However, this is ONLY an opportunity, whether or not the students take it is up to them and their guardians. The school has provided a safe learning environment for the students who are willing to properly use it, not abuse it. During and incident of bullying that I experienced 2 years ago the school acted and did what they could to help remove this situation: but a lot of work had to be done by ourselves to resolve it. Kurri Kurri High School is an excellent and school but students need to take the initiative to appreciate it. Number 2) in regards to the long suspention issue, please read on- a ‘long suspension’ which can be imposed by the principal of the school to be 20 school days In determining if a student’s behaviour is Serious enough to warrant a long suspension the principal must Consider: The safety of students and staff The merit and circumstances of the particular case Factors such as the age, individual needs, any disability and Developmental level of students. See policy 6.3 Long Suspensions please go to https://det.nsw.edu.au/policies/student_serv/discipline/stu_discip_gov/suspol_07.pdf this policy outlines everything relating to Department of Education and Communities student discipline policy through out the state of New South Wales. in regards to individuals feeing that the school was desperate to get us to leave and not have the police attend I pull your attention to the following information - There is a policy present for students needing to be interviewed in relation to incidents that occurred at school, on the way to, or leaving. This policy can be viewed here: police.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/108808/Code_CRIME_-_January_2012.pdf Number 3) It states Interviewing at school ‘Avoid interviewing a child at school. Where possible, interview the child at home. Code of Practice of CRIME 86 If it is necessary to interview a child at school tell the child’s parents or carers, remembering the rules governing the admissibility of statements taken from children. Do not allow a school staff member to sit in on an interview where the incident under investigation involves the school. Refer to the Schools and NSW Police Information Exchange Memorandum of Understanding.´ Students should be interviewed in the comfort of their own home. This has three clear beneficial outcomes for both parent and student: 1. police attendance may be lengthy, as in this case wasn’t deemed an ‘Emergency’ 2. ensures confidentially of the victim 3. in a case to let ‘tempers cool’ of BOTH the Victim and Offender In addition to the issues of the police attending the school and individuals needing to be questioned I believe all staff members involved in this incident at Kurri Kurri High School were generally acting in regards to and adhering to DEC policies and remained concerned for your daughter’s general wellbeing. I personally believe that the school has done the right thing in dealing with the matter at hand and has resolved it to the best of its ability. Sorry you feel this way,
