This week, 100 years ago, Australia’s relatively young Navy demonstrated its skill and determination in defence of the convoy carrying ANZAC troops to the First World War. The naval battle between HMAS Sydney and German SMS Emden is now known as the Battle of Cocos. The Sydney and her crew forced the Emden aground on North Keeling Island in the Indian Ocean. 4 Australian crew were killed in the confrontation and 16 wounded. While the losses from the German light cruiser were far higher, 134 killed, 69 wounded and 157 crew captured. The Battle of Cocos is remembered on our 2014 50 cent uncirculated coin - Battle of Cocos, which depicts the Sydney and the Emden, along with a depiction of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This coin forms part of the Mint’s Australia at War collection available as a subscription series – https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/Australia-at-War-Set/711069.aspx and for individual purchase from the Mint - https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2014-50c-Cocos-Islands/310336.aspx
