This week I join those mourning the sudden loss of Pui Fong Yim Lee, lifelong community activist, teacher, and a beloved mother and grandmother. This tragedy is yet another in a long series of wakeup calls that the City must do more to protect pedestrians. A few short days after the accident, another pedestrian was injured by a car at the very same intersection. We also know that between 2007 and 2011, over 4,100 San Franciscans--almost 2 per day--were injured or killed in pedestrian collisions. We need to act on this issue now. In this year’s District 3 participatory budgeting process, our residents voted to allocate $20,000 to make pedestrian safety improvements at the highest need intersections. This week, I called on the MTA to use this funding along with available resources to examine pedestrian safety improvements and traffic calming measures that can help prevent future tragedies like the one that took Pui Fong Yim Lees life. Our City owes it to our seniors and our most vulnerable residents to ensure they can get around San Francisco safely. bit.ly/1vaJwF3
