This week is “SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK”. The “Safety Tip of the Day” for the students for each day of the week includes THE FOLLOWING: Monday- Your School Crossing Guard is an employee of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. They have to be trained and are certified through the Florida Department of Transportation. All School Crossing Guards must be re-certified on an annual basis. Tuesday- Make sure to always use the sidewalks when they are provided. They are placed there to keep you out of traffic and keep you SAFE! It is actually a state statue (F.S. 316.130); PEDESTRIANS SHALL NOT WALK IN THE ROADWAY IF SIDEWALKS ARE PROVIDED. Wednesday- It is the law for all riders under the age of 16 to wear a bicycle helmet. Make sure it fits properly, is fastened securely and meets a nationally recognized standard (F.S. 316.2065) besides that, your brain is important. Remember to always wear your bicycle helmet properly each and every time you get on your bicycle. Thursday- To keep safe as you walk to school, make sure you go with another person or a group. This will keep bullies and predators at bay. They will target a lone wolf so make sure you stay with the pack to keep safe. Should you notice a student being bullied or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, TELL A TEACHER, PARENT OR EVEN YOUR SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD. We are there to keep YOU safe. Friday- On average, it takes a School Crossing Guard 30 seconds to complete a crossing. Please be patient while the guard secures the intersection and then directs you to cross. Should you be a car rider, remind your parents to keep the crosswalks open because the guard cannot cross students if a car is in the crosswalk. In Florida, drivers must YIELD-SLOW DOWN OR STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS even when traffic control signals or yield signs are not present. It’s not just a law, it’s a LIFE.
