This week, my heart goes out to my sweetie, Heather Neil, Erin and Grahame and Katherine Neil, as I join them in remembering their dad, Ron Neil. Ron was my colleague at Newmarket Canada Post Office.....a classy man who I adored, and who kept me company evenings when I would sort mail and flyers for fellow letter carries. I usually did two routes a day as a contract non-union letter carrier, starting by sorting mail at six am (or 3:30 am, in Markham), and again later in the day on my 2nd route. Most days, there was no time to eat (I lived on trail mix for 5 years) but many nights I returned to the Newmarket P.O. around 8:30 pm after last drop off of undelivered parcels to Upper Canada Mall, and Ron would have a boxed meal ready and waiting for starving me (usually something spicy, Jamaican jerk or similar) plus a coconut or pineapple drink....he would NEVER let me pay him back! Ron was THAT considerate! Ron and I always talked about either his beloved wife, or about Granada (his favourite vacation spot and home away from home) or music. Usually music. We shared all our favourite songs. I had the pleasure of training his daughter, Heather, to be a letter carrier...I always thought of her as a daughter.....I hope I told you that, Heather. A few times, after the funeral, I came to look in on Rons wife Katherine. I still have the CD of Rons favourite music that was given out at his funeral. I can NEVER hear Israel IZ Kamakawiwoʻoles What A Wonderful World without thinking about and remembering Ron, and since the day he passed on, I have ALWAYS cried when I hear this song. Rest in Paradise, Ron. You were an amazing, loving, selfless, grand man -- you belonged to a different era of gallantry. You left us so suddenly and unexpectedly that New Years eve of 2008.....I never got a chance to really tell you that. https://youtube/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I
