This week, the Federal government released its “review” into the animal welfare framework for live exports – the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance Scheme (ESCAS). The review: - admits that it is not possible to know the true rates of compliance with ESCAS (page 17); - states that there have been 22 instances of non-compliance with a “direct animal welfare impact” (page 51); and - makes no recommendations as to how the system can be strengthened. ESCAS is inherently flawed. It relies on industry reporting and self-regulation, is not legally enforceable overseas, and only requires adherence to the most basic animal welfare standards. Animals Australia has exposed major breaches of ESCAS in Jordan, Gaza, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius and Kuwait. You can read the report here:
