This week, we will share with you guys about Marcos and Carlos, - TopicsExpress

This week, we will share with you guys about Marcos and Carlos, our Cuban sliders (Trachemys decussata). They are closely related to Red-ear sliders whom we discussed about 2 weeks ago. Cuban sliders are native to Cuba and have been introduced to many places in the region. They are also traded in the illegal wildlife trade. Interestingly, Red-ear sliders (Trachemys scripta) are believed to be interbreeding with Cuban sliders. Marcos was found by members of public when he was attacked by a dog. He also has a deformed carapace, most probably due to a improper diet in the past. Carlos was yet another victim of a traffic accident. He was run over by a vehicle but survived with a broken carapace. Luckily, his internal organs were not affected. Due to their poor state of health, they were kept indoors in ACRES where we ensured that their health and appetite improved. We finally decided that Marcos and Carlos were fit and ready for a better and bigger enclosure outside. They were introduced to each other in their new pond tank for the first time. Surrounded by ferns, basking spots and filtration system, they seem to enjoy their new enclosure. However, we have currently separated them as Marcos (The slower one with the deformed shell) has been bullying Carlos (The healthier, quicker and bigger one). Hopefully they will get used to each other’s presence in the near future.
