This weekend I have been reading about Bromine (Potassium Bromate) - TopicsExpress

This weekend I have been reading about Bromine (Potassium Bromate) added to all Wheat Flour for making bread (whole-wheat and white bread) which began in the 1980s. Recent scientific reports are now claiming that the alarming increase in cancer cases observed since then may certainly be due to eating modern day brominated bread products. This epidemic increase in cases of all cancers is highest in the USA, higher than any other country in the World, as this is where almost 90% of all flour is brominated at the start of production. How do you avoid brominated flour products? How do you even know where they are from? The bromination additive isnt on the label of any product. How do you know if youre eating bread/flour that comes from the USA? Personally, I have cut all breads from my diet. I do eat 100% rye bread but I will be contacting the manufacturer as to the source of the rye flour used and whether or not its brominated. Humans stuff up all the foods they touch and I dont want anything further in my diet that causes cancer! Good bye bread and all flour products. It was banned in Sri Lanka in 2001[4] and China in 2005. In the United States, it has not been banned. The FDA sanctioned the use of bromate before the Delaney clause of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act—which bans potentially carcinogenic substances— went into effect in 1958. But since 1991 the FDA has urged bakers to voluntarily stop using it. In California a warning label is required when bromated flour is used.[citation needed] Japanese baked goods manufacturers stopped using potassium bromate voluntarily in 1980; however, Yamazaki Baking resumed its use in 2005, claiming they had new production methods to reduce the amount of the chemical which remained in the final product.[5]
