This weekend the Bride and I ran an errand to a local big box - TopicsExpress

This weekend the Bride and I ran an errand to a local big box store, but we didnt get anything on our list, so the whole thing was a water haul. Todays Old Timey Phrase has nothing to do with hauling water. The first recorded use was somewhere around 1823, and described a day of fishing when the nets were hauled in but contained nothing but water, hence, a water haul. Some southerners have explained it as a fruitless day of fishing when you come back with nothing but a bucket of water. I tend to lean toward the first explanation myself.
