This weekend we answered a call about two 5 month old German Shepherds who were being isolated in a wooden kennel, not allowed to see sunlight or interact with humans at all. We understand that many people in Tanzania want/have guard dogs to protect their property and family. We would like to take this opportunity to explain that Guard Dogs can be Family Friendly Dogs and will actually protect you and your family better if you allowed them to bond with you, accept and return your love. Dogs are born to be part of a social structure, a pack or a family. When you isolate them, you deny them this. Many people are under the false influence that in order to breed a dog who will attack intruders you need to cause damage to their mental state: i.e. lock them away in kennels, starving them of any human interaction so that when they are released at night they are angry, mean and scary. However, this method is not only extremely cruel and illegal, but creates anxious and confused animals. Dogs raised to be anti-social, anxious, scared and therefore aggressive, DO NOT MAKE GOOD GUARD DOGS. The better you treat your dog, the more loyal your dog is to you and the easier he will be to train and ultimately protect you. If you raise a dog to be a part of your family, the dog will naturally want to protect you because of his loyalty and trust for you. If you raise a dog in cruel conditions, you and your family members will be afraid of him because of his strength and aggression, when actually he is just starving for attention. He only wants to be a part of the pack. Thats how dogs view their family. When they are isolated away from the humans in the pack they become confused and destructive to property and everyone around them, including you. Let your dog in to your heart and he will return the favor with 100% loyalty and protection. Keeping a dog isolated in a kennel with no windows and sunlight is illegal in Tanzania under the Animal Welfare Act (2008). Animals who are kept in such conditions, not only suffer mentally, but also suffer from parasitic diseases caused by flea and tick infestation. Fleas and Ticks carry diseases that can cause extreme discomfort and sometimes death. Dogs are no different to humans. They prefer comfort and love to discomfort and neglect. They need to see and feel sunlight and socialize. They need to be bathed frequently and also be seen regularly by a caring Veterinarian. Police Dogs and Guard Dogs in other countries in the world are considered Mans Best Friend and are a part of the Officers family in order to gain ultimate trust and control over the dog. Dogs who are isolated and purposely made anti-social suffer poor mental health and are suffering a terrible life. If youre considering getting a puppy or dog with the intent of keeping him exclusively outside, with no socialization or love, please reconsider -- You do not need to be cruel to an animal just to protect your family. You can train your dog without isolating or denying him his basics needs -this cruel method only creates a mentally unhealthy and unpredictable dog. The best guard dogs are a part of your family and naturally protect you because of the strong bond you have created.
