This weeks Disease of the Week is Allergic Rhinitis! Beloved by all, allergic rhinitis is caused by histamine release from the nose and eyes when pollen and other allergens come in contact with mucous membranes. Its characterized by runny nose, itchy eyes, stuffiness, and sneezing. Often there is decreased energy, chronic cough, and an increase in colds and other viral illnesses. Generally children wont start to show signs off true allergic rhinitis until 1-2 y of age, with most between 3-5 y of age. The mainstay of treatment is stopping the pollen exposure. I advise parents to use the baby saline and do a couple sprays after the kids come in from school or playing, and have them blow, cleaning out the pollens. Clean the face and eyes with a damp cloth, and a nightly shower with hair wash to get the pollens out. For those who need more help, starting with a small dose (2.5 mg to 5 mg) of Zyrtec or Claritin can help. If those seem not to be helping, please let us know and we can advance treatment
