This weeks article in the Headlight: The Message Christmas has a message. Sometimes people interpret the message to be to get as many gifts as you can. Some might believe the message about Christmas is eating as much food as possible or spending as much time with family as you can. While gifts and food and family are not inherently wrong, we so easily miss the eternal message of Christmas. We as Christians even give the message but it is unclear terms. We use phrases such as “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” or even the spiritual “Joy to the World” and “Jesus is the reason for the season.” But what does all that mean? The first Christmas and everything surrounding it was very clear. The message was plainly given to so many of the characters in the Christmas narrative. Take a look at the message given to Joseph several months before Jesus was born. The apostle Matthew wrote about Mary, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) The message given to Mary was just as clear and prominent. The angel told her in Luke 1:31-33, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will no end.” Even the message to the shepherds was clear. It says in Luke 2:11, “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” So what is the message of Christmas? Jesus is our Savior! That is why He is the reason for this season. That is why there is joy in this world. That is why this is a happy and merry season, because there is a Savior that takes away the sin of ALL people! Let the message be clear this season: JESUS!
