This weeks comments from the chair... AG IMAGE IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY I read in yesterday’s local paper about the multi-millionaires we have in our region, listed in the top 150 wealthiest people in Queensland. Of the ten who live locally, six are primary producers, two are in construction, one is a property developer and one an investor. Each of the farmers/graziers who have wealth of greater than $50M would have other investments I am sure, but their principal business is agriculture. I know most of them, and they all embrace agriculture, and they embrace agricultural science and technology. Despite the negative stories about agriculture, leading farmers and graziers can still make a lot of money…. the business of agriculture can be good! However, there was also bad news last week when a truck loaded with ammonium nitrate exploded south of Charleville, destroying a truck, a fire engine, and a bridge, and putting the highway out for heavy vehicles for many months to come. Fortunately, no one was killed, but some sustained serious injuries and required hospitalisation. Apart from the injuries and the destruction, the bad bit about this incident was that the load was labelled as “fertiliser” on the daily news. Almost no ammonium nitrate is used in agriculture. Most of it is used for mining explosive, as was the case here. Bad that agriculture “gets the rap” for “dangerous” fertiliser when in fact, this was a truckload of mining explosive. Improving the knowledge, understanding and appreciation for agriculture is a responsibility all of us should carry. David Hamilton
