This weeks ear worm isnt really an ear worm, but rather just made a quick appearance into my sad songs playlists this week. And I wanted to talk about Volcano Choir, Justin Vernons side project. While Volcano Choir still shares many cornerstone characteristics as Vernons Bon Iver, most noticeably his falsetto self-harmonies and distinct melancholic guitar progressions, the band is a beast of its own. Focusing on a full, plugged in band, Vernon explores an area that seems too digital, too rock n roll, for his more analog and acoustic predecessor. The video, done by Minneapolis native Dan Huiting (who went on to do Pitchfork music videos, including Bon Iver, and originally from MPLS.tv), is my favorite kind of video, making the band themselves the focus during a live performance. And Vernon, at the head of this project, still manages to prove that hes perfected the sound of heartbreak, a task we Midwesterners know all too well come winter, when everyone shuts out the world and seals themselves up in their respective holes until spring.
