This week’s #WorshipWednesday (a day late- sorry!) focuses on - TopicsExpress

This week’s #WorshipWednesday (a day late- sorry!) focuses on Philly native Hollis P Monroe, who currently resides in Montreal. Hollis’ work can be found in the catalogs of many world-renowned record labels both of the past and present. Hollis has been quite prolific over his decades long musical career, with many important tracks in the house music history books. His most recent work has been with his The Black 80s project. This moniker is a production team composed of Hollis and vocalist/producer Overnite. The two recently paired together to sculpt some deep house gems, including: “Move On” For Jimpster’s Freerange Records, “My Space” featured on Upon You Records, and “Look Out” (a collaboration with Rampa) for Keinemusik. Paving the way for these more recent sounds is a track that certainly cannot be forgotten about when speaking about Hollis and his work, “I’m Lonely”. This absolute classic was released back in 1998 on Stickman Records and still can be heard on global dance floors today. Fast forward three years and Hollis would find himself on his hometown label Worship Recordings with the ‘Lemon Pie’ EP by Universal Agents (WOR.11). Universal Agents is a production duo composed of Hollis and George Pallikaris aka G Pal. Due to the timing of its release in 2001, the track “Lemon Pie” can be considered part of the blueprint for what we know as tech-house today. Lemon Pie swings tightly, as atmospheric sweeps and a melodic synth line guide warm and moving percussion elements. The Solomonic Sound remix of “Lemon Pie” builds an epic journey from just sampling 4 beats from the original, creating a version seeped in the label’s foundation dub-house sound. “Lemon Pie Dub” serves more as a DJ tool that works perfect for on the fly looping and sampling. We reached out to Hollis for his input on this Worship classic, and here is a bit of what he had to say: What I remember was that G Pal and I were put together by Rick Salzer, who was at the time the main A&R guy and publicist for Plastic City US, Fiji, and the other UCMG NY labels. We had both done records for him and I think he felt like we would be a good match to do something together. I had never met him before showing up at his place on a Friday afternoon but we clicked instantly and went to work almost non-stop. He had an amazing amount of energy and I tried to keep up by drinking Red Bull for the first time! In the end, we came up with 6 songs in total over the next 3 days. If I remember correctly, we agreed that he would both bring the tracks to Rick and I would bring the tracks to my people back in Philly. Unfortunately, he must have finally crashed right after I left, but I went straight to Ovum from the bus station and the rest is history. Two ended up on Ovum and two ended up with Worship making it a total Philly affair!” Be sure to head over to the label’s Youtube channel ( bit.ly/1yxoShU ) to hear “Lemon Pie,” “Lemon Pie dub”, and the epic Solomonic Sound remix entitled “Solomonic Agents”.
