This whole Ray Rice thing is a complete fuster-cluck. And no, I - TopicsExpress

This whole Ray Rice thing is a complete fuster-cluck. And no, I dont mean the situation as much as I mean you, the online public, who has felt the need to burden me with your opinions, your weighty morality and your lofty self-righteousness. I cant get near a thread about Ray Rice without seeing a plethora of perspectives on the issue, and somehow every single one of them irritates me. Its not about whos right or wrong. I can dislike one opinion, but then Ill read the exact opposite opinion and be every bit as aggravated by it. I think Im just bothered by the fact that we feel so secure in ourselves to spew such dogmatic garbage as if our opinions constitute some indubitable truth that we must bless the rest of humanity with. So please, allow me to retort… OPINION: I genuinely pity any of you out there who have even an ounce of sympathy for this monster. ME: Hes not a monster. Hes a human being who made a mistake. It was wrong and unacceptable, but dont act like youre perfect. OPINION: Lets try to be tolerant and accept the fact that human beings arent perfect. He made a mistake, but hes not an evil person. ME: Horse shit. He hits women. Hes a scumbag. OPINION: (This was a personal favorite of mine from when the first video came out all those months ago -- a wonderful expression of willful ignorance.) Innocent until proven guilty. She could have just passed out in the elevator for all we know. The reality is that we really dont know what happened. ME: The reality is he was dragging her around like a piece of meat. Ive seen tigers haul their kills around with more respect and discretion than Rice did with his wife. Trust me, he cold-clocked her. OPINION: Its not our place to judge. Leave that to God, and learn to forgive. ME: Its not my place to forgive. Ill leave that to God, and judge Rice based on the standards of human decency that are obvious to any sensible human being. OPINION: Honestly, his personal life is none of our business. Im a Ravens fan and a football fan so all Im concerned with is what he does on the field, not off of it. (Or, as another poster put it, 4th and 29. Thats all Im saying. 4th and 29.) ME: Oh, okay, so lets just turn a blind eye to the vicious moral crimes of these professional athletes and justify our self-imposed blindness by affording Rice his right to privacy, meanwhile the glorification of criminals continues and the cycle that produces these problems is perpetuated. OPINION: Ray, Ive been a fan for a very long time and Im truly disappointed in you. What you did was completely unforgivable and I cant even believe that you would do something like this. So awful. ME: Yeah, and you know whats worse? He sucks at football. Thank you for affording me this opportunity to deliver my opinions while simultaneously insulting you for expressing your own. Yes, I am that kind of human being.
