This year the White Ribbon Australia campaign is ‘Australia, land of secrets’. Currently in Australia one woman a week is killed by a current or former partner. The ‘Australia, land of secrets’ campaign calls on men, women and the whole community to help uncover some of Australia’s secrets and help stop men’s violence against women. White Ribbon Day is November 25, a day where men are asked to swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. But we can all make a commitment to challenge comments or behaviours that show disrespect to women or indicate men are entitled to greater power or privilege than women. At each year level in SHines Focus Schools program, we look at the impact of gendered expectations on intimate relationships, because narrow views of masculinity and rigid gender roles are a key determinant of men’s violence against women. Challenging these rigid gender roles enables both men and women to live in a freer and safer community.
