This year we decided for the first time to go to Myrtle Beach for their Halloween celebration at Broadway at the Beach, Larry always fusses about the get-ups I build each year for him to wear, and protest that THIS is HIS year to retire from the costumes, never again. We KNEW going in that this is perhaps the top costume contest in the South East. They actually have a panel of judges and it is not base solely on applause like in Charlotte. We pull out on 74 in Peachland, headed to the beach, Larry, fussing the whole way and a silver star shaped balloon floats out of nowhere and comes right in front of the car. I said Larry, look at the silver star balloon, it is a sign, tonight I will make you a star. ...Then April buys a bag of Uncle Rays chips at the store on the way. On the back of the bag was a story that Uncle Ray shared about boldness and courage. His story was that he was chosen to be the lead Rip Van Winkle in the school play as a child, practiced for weeks, but on the day before the play he got acute stage fright and didnt go to school on the day of the big play. He said in the past 48 years he had always wished it was a day he could take back. Uncle Ray then says in the story Remember that winners never quit and quitters never win. ....So like the fool I am, I say OMG Larry, look, this bag of chips is for you...WINNERS NEVER QUIT, QUITTERS NEVER WIN....another sign....Sometimes I wonder how he puts up with me and my signs. LOL..So I proceeded to paint and paste him for a couple of hours getting him ready for this contest, and he is still just a fussing. He hit the boardwalk and was an instant hit. There is no telling how many photos and selfies he is in today on FB. I wired up that cloud of genie smoke around him so that smoke actually glows at night, it really did look cool, if I might say so myself. He really did look like he was on a magic carpet. We both made it to the finals and Larry won third place and $500....the fussing-silenced!!! The guy that won first place was a transformer and he told us that he had been coming down to the beach for years trying to win and after many years, this year, he finally won. We were very happy for him, I love to see WINNERS THAT NEVER QUIT!
