Thomas Breen, a 71-year-old Navy veteran, visited the Phoenix Veterans Administration emergency room last September when he discovered blood in his urine. He was concerned his bladder cancer had returned, but doctors didnt check for cancer. trov.es/1iJuZLm Instead, Breen was forced to wait for an appointment with a primary-care physician. It appears his name may have ended up on a now-notorious paper waiting list. CNN and the International Business Times report that this secret list contained the names of as many as 1,600 sick veterans--all forced to wait months for an appointment. But Breen never made it to an appointment. By mid-November, almost two months later, his condition had worsened and he was taken to a non-VA hospital where he soon died. Just days later the Phoenix VA called: they were ready to schedule his appointment. “I told them ‘You’re a little late, said his daughter-in-law. Breens case is not an anomaly, former Phoenix VA doctor Sam Foote says. Dr. Foote estimates 40 veterans have died while on this secret list.
