Those arguing in defense of Jack Harry Stiles wont deny that he is troubled. In fact, thats the basis of their defense - the man needs psychological help. On the anniversary of his mother’s death, Stiles called 911, asked for police and fire services, and requested hospitalization. In talking to a crisis worker, he outlined a homicidal plan for a mass shooting at a nearby mall and other locations with guns he doesn’t own and said he needed help. State prosecutors in the case originally offered Stiles that help. But that deal is no longer on the table. The mall that was said to be targeted in Stiles rant threatened legal liability against the state, pressuring prosectors to enforce stiffer penalties against Stiles. What was originally deemed a cry for help has now been labeled a terroristic threat. To some, this case is about how law enforcement protects the public from harm; to others, it’s about how the justice system treats individuals, albeit potentially dangerous, making a last ditch cry for help. #saltlakecitylawyers #lawyersinsaltlakecity
