Those folks who came to Dr. Laura Tedescos talk in April heard about the important role played by heritage preservation in U.S. diplomatic efforts. Unfortunately, the last few weeks have shown the power of heritage destruction - where factions in ethnic clashes seek to erase the history of their foes. Bosnia....Rwanda....Sudan....Iraq...All of these episodes of ethnic violence involve the destruction of important heritage sites. Destroying these sites denies an enemy their past and erases their heritage. It is one of many ways we see one side of a conflict dehumanize the other. Doing so likely helps to justify the horrible acts that are perpetrated against one another.
