Those fresh from school and the ones long at home without jobs - TopicsExpress

Those fresh from school and the ones long at home without jobs should earnestly start thinking of going into agriculture; crop or animal production, both hold a very huge profit potential. There is an ever ready market for our farm products. Lets take garri, a staple food in almost every home in Nigeria, for example. A bag of garri goes for #5,600 to #7,000 depending on your location. Two hectares of land cultivated with cassava may give you roughly 100 or more bags of garri(expert verification is needed) if yield is good. Imagine the profit margin in three farming seasons. There is simply no chance for everyone to get into the federal or state civil service pay roll with the high level of unemployment. The sight of hundreds of thousands of youths jostling for a few vacant positions at a particular government agency while our lands are lying fallow begging to be cultivated, makes me wonder where our entrepreneurial skills have gone to. Among this stranded youths no doubt, are those who already have something doing, tangible at that, but just needlessly want to be on the government pay roll___the pathetic bunch among the crowds. In reality, there are few vacancies to accomodate the teaming unemployed and until the leaders do the needful and the economy starts functioning at full potential, lets all go back to the farm rather than waste hours of man power waiting for almost non-existence jobs. Its not easy starting without capital but we must not start big after all. Perhaps we can help ourselves when help refuses to come our way. Agriculture is the future of our economy lets exploit it, maximally.
