Those measures didnt end crime mind you, we had recidivists, every society does. Our only difference was the pragmatism of those in charge and the willingness of the people to let go of privileges that were impeding our shared survival. Murderers and rapists were executed, plain and simple, when there is no room to house them, no one to guard them, and no food to spare, the decision was an easy one. As for robbery, it was simple really, when everyone is sharing a loaf of bread, no one is defending the rights of someone who took more than their fair share. Judicial and very public punishments were meted out and I can guarantee you, no matter how awful it sound, when a man is whipped before a cheering crowd, he thinks very seriously about stealing a second time. The shame of it all is a far larger cross to bear than a few marks across your back.
