Those of you in the hospitality world know how much time and effort Ive worked in the last 10 years on TFWs and the LMO program. Im a huge advocate of the program when used properly. I just recently put out a posting for a Front Desk Agent and have received over 40 resumes of qualified candidates (Ive received about 80 resumes in total in two days and almost all from Edmonton and surrounding areas). Of those 40 qualified candidates over half are Canadians. The reason my job posting is open isnt because someone left, but because I turned a part-time position into a full-time position and the part-time person does not have the ability to meet the commitment. Those of you in the urban markets who are relying on the TFW program are not working hard enough to find employees...and not working hard enough to keep them. I do agree the rural markets face a different challenge, however the only TFWs Ive ever needed in three separate rural markets Ive worked in are cooks. Im pretty sure Im more than likely going to be lambasted over this post, however the grand standing by owners in the media who pay terrible wages in fast food and accommodations should be ashamed as they open and build more hotels and restaurants. I dont know one owner who has only one hotel or restaurant...they usually have multiple and in these markets are extremely profitable. I am not surprised at the changes to the TWF program. It can cost upwards of $5,000 to bring in a TFW from another country between application fees, flights and temporary accommodations. Why are we not offering Canadians in high unemployment areas $5,000 to relocate to our markets for entry level, unskilled positions? Just a question Id thought Id ask. Do not interpret this as racist either as in most peoples minds TFWs are generally Indian or Filipino and is a sad stereotype by most Canadians. Ive recruited all over the world including Russia, Ireland and Croatia as TFWs come from everywhere. So the next time you see an owner grand standing on TV about his/her sappy story about how they may not be able to keep their multi-million dollar entity open, think twice about the quality of owner they may be and the living conditions their employees may be subject to, specifically TFWs. Ive never seen a McDonalds close because it wasnt profitable...have you?
