Those of you who know me well know that my life have been touched twice by dementia. I lost my dear mum and step father to the disease and that time represents one of the most devastating periods of my life. When I find articles that give excellent summaries about what we know about Alzheimers Disease/dementia prevention I like to share them. Right at the end of this article there is a link to another excellent article by MIT researcher Stephanie Seneffs summarizing the latest findings. The most important thing we do know bout Alzheimers disease prevention are the following rules about diet. These rules are excellent rules to follow to help you fight any number of health concerns by increasing your bodys own natural resistance 1. Avoid all simple carbohydrates as much as you can (this means processed sugar and wheat) 2. Increase complex carbohydrates this means green leafy vegetables - some fruits although fruits should not be eaten in excess and if eating grains remember WHOLE GRAINS are the way to go - brown rice and quinoa are excellent examples of this. 3. When eating meat remember the portion you should consume should be as big as the palm of your hand. 2. Increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids (these are the good fats found in oily fish, nuts and seeds and certain fruits such as avocado). If uncertain take a good quality supplement. 3. Drink more water 4. Avoid all processed foods as much as you can - and in turn all preservatives, emulsifiers, flavours, colours and chemical sugar substitutes. We do not know the long term effects of these chemicals and I certainly do not want to be part of that experiment given what we do know. Always remember the 80/20 rule 80% percent good and 20% bad - if you are like me then its the 90/10 rule you aim for knowing if you do that you will make 80/20 for sure :) Have a wonderful Christmas...my goodness....3 days to go !!
