Those who are intelligent and care deeply for their students are especially punished by the consumer model of education, which dumbs down (oops, makes more accessible) and puts the consumer/student in the position of power over the teacher, thus robbing the teacher of legitimate authority qua teacher. I used to respect teachers even when I disagreed with them because, simply enough, they knew more than I did and wrote my grades.
