Those who follow developments in politics might have noticed that recently there was an order by central information commission which brought six national political parties under RTI. This was a very landmark judgement which was made possible after 3 years of legal battle and painstaking research effort by an NGO called ADR. What it essentially meant was the political parties which claim to work in public interest and with public donations will have to furnish information under RTI to citizens as RTI mandates all organizations that use public funds to be under RTI. All political parties have opposed the move because they are afraid of transparency. They did not challenge the judgement of the CIC in court because they know it is on strong legal footing and they are very likely to lose. So all political parties have ganged up to amend the law itself to take themselves out of RTI. They are about to do that in the upcoming session of parliament that starts on 5th August. This affects citizens a lot more than most of us realize. Political parties are at the core of our democracy and lack of transparency in how they function and finance elections is where the fountain head of corruption is. The media has been criticizing this move of political parties quite a bit but if citizens become vocal about it and tell their MP that they do not support such a move .. it will make a lot of difference.
