Those who think that the founding fathers had civilized political discourse have to look at the Jefferson vs Adams election campaign, or the history of the Alien sedition act under Adams. I dare say that the level of nastiness then exceeded anything we have now. Those who use the brief blip of the constitutional convention discount the fact that none of the participants had elections and political interests hanging in the balance, or turfs that they needed defending. Actually, if the constitutional convention teaches us anything, it is the fact that we need to set severe term limits on politicians so that they focus on the task of legislating (or minimizing legislation) rather than pity political fights driven by the election campaign cycle and campaign finance.
