“ Thou shalt not murder makes a sort of sense, but has hardly deterred humankind from committing wholesale slaughter. We have found it convenient to redefine murder as necessary to justify the act of murder as an arbiter of differences of opinion. More recently, Thou shalt not steal (property rights) has been conceived as a sturdier foundation for moral behavior, but like murder, property is whatever the individual or the pressure-bought law defines it as. The slogan that forbids stealing did not restrict the swords and spears of the Hebrews as they took possession of the property of the Canaanites . . . after murdering them. Those two obviously ineffective slogans were delivered personally to the Hebrews with the endorsement of what they regarded as the highest authority.
