Though I have trained as a chef (though my career was of a completely different sort) and cooked seriously for more than 30 years now, even with a passion, I am more than ever grateful for the graces and blessings good food and the table may bring. It is an ancient and very deep magic, the table. And if you doubt it, try it. Over time you will find its blessing is of a higher order, and its graces are but shadows of far more powerful graces which await a heart open to God. For he has set a table of stunning beauty, and invites us to banquet with him, if only we will sit at his invitation. I still believe the highest and best use of my skill is to cook for my family, and particularly on Sunday. In many respects, Sunday dinner has been the glue that has knitted our family together. And the candlelight dinners served on the marble table in my kitchen each night has been the source of tremendous blessing, which goes far beyond the food itself.
