“Though a philosopher may live remote from business, the genius - TopicsExpress

“Though a philosopher may live remote from business, the genius of philosophy, if carefully cultivated by several, must gradually diffuse itself throughout the whole of society, and bestow a similar correctness on every art and calling,. The politician will acquire greater foresight and subtlety, in the subdividing and balancing of power; and the general more regularity in his discipline, and more caution in his plans and operations.” - David Hume. This is exactly the value of sceptical philosophy (the sensible mitigated kind) and why a liberal education is so important. Its not that we should have Philosopher Kings nor even that such an education is of any immediate practical benefit to society. The pursuit of philosophy instead has a humanising effect on the character of individual and obviously in the cultivation of his/her tastes and sensibilities. A more sceptically minded individual will be more inclined to eschew extremism and dogmatism and the effect will tend to be moderating on both political discourse and practice. Its definitely a case of where influence is diffused throughout and subtly felt - like a fine spice used very sparingly in cooking, yet it makes all the difference.
