Though most of us know hops as the herb that puts the bitter in beer, its been used medicinally for centuries, traditionally, hops treats nervous disorders, insomnia, and stomach cramps. And when it comes to using hops for better sleep, science agrees with tradition: Clinical trials show that the herb, especially when combined with valerian and/or passionflower, shortens the time it takes to nod off and improves sleep quality better than a placebo and as well as some sleeping pills. Caution: since hops could, theoretically, increase estrogen levels, women whove had breast cancer should avoid using the herb.
