Though raised in a Pro Union state, somewhere in my life - I - TopicsExpress

Though raised in a Pro Union state, somewhere in my life - I became sort of anti union feeling that they held companies hostage and ran up wages needlessly. Certainly working trade shows in Chicago didnt help my thoughts on Unions. But in reading a union newsletter this morning, I kind of understand the other side of it. Kids graduating from college now are unable to get a job in many cases because the universities are not committed to finding them jobs, and frankly many times colleges are not teaching students the skills to help them to find a job. You can think of many universities as Diploma Mills, harnessing students with massive debts and no promise of a job. Certainly the universities do nothing to protect the rights of people in the workplace. As a personal example, insurance carriers deny claims now (I recently had one of my very important prescriptions denied by Express Scripts) and there is no group to fight for my rights against these nasty insurance companies - only me spending hours on the phone arguing with the insurance idiots who seem to as a matter of procedure deny the coverage from the get go. The Unions do stand for the rights of their members. They leverage the power of the many people to stand together and fight for rights - for better working conditions, wages etc… They also have training programs that I would say are very useful to the job - not classes that are academic in nature and frankly useless in the real world. Companies founded by academics often have products that are fascinating but not ready for real business needs, or else they dont know know to make them market ready. Finally - unions actually will pay a benefit when you retire - until you die, and they have death benefits. Most companies no longer have retirement programs other than your 401K and some dont have that now that the government is pinching their pockets like crazy - it just rolls downhill to the employees who have no recourse other than to find new jobs at other companies who are hopeful more employee oriented. Not wanting to offend my fellow conservative friends who are anti union, but I truly am for the peoples rights. Thats really WHY I consider myself conservative - I am anti government and pro- people. The reason I have become anti government is that I dont feel the government is fighting for our rights anymore. They are fighting to line their own pockets and putting together programs that dont meet our needs well. I cant really think of anyone these days who look out for those hard working men and woman who are out there building buildings, infrastructure and other really hard jobs other than the unions. Even white collar workers seem to need better representation frankly. Given how the government is forcing companies to look out less for their employees and more for their own company welfare, maybe there is a place for unions who look out for peoples rights, help them find jobs, and pay some good benefits. Just wanted to share my impressions and thoughts…
