Thought-Bites to Live By (Please read Luke 4:18-21) Sometimes we may feel intimidated by various Bible passages that seem difficult to understand. So it’s refreshing to come across passages that seem to wrap up a whole concept in a few words. One of these is our text, where Jesus refers to a couple of Isaiah’s prophecies to summarise His mission. And we see all those objectives accomplished by his life, death and resurrection. Surely we’re all familiar with John 3:16, a passage in which Jesus presents the gospel in miniature: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (NIV). What beautiful language concerning a wonderful promise! It’s a happenstance, no doubt, that somebody has given the same chapter and verse number to another succinct teaching by the apostle John: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers” (1 John 3:16). Here’s an Old Testament passage that’s really handy for reminding us of how God wants us to live: “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). You can’t do any better than what this verse teaches. And recall the words of Jesus’ mother as she told the servants at that wedding just before Jesus turned the water into wine: “Whatever He says to you, do it” (John 2:5, NAS). These are words to live by.
