Thought I would share my Barbarian At The Gate (Studio 54 rope line) story. My partner (he looked like Ryan Phillippe in the film 54 ) and I were in NYC 80-81? for the Billboard Conference, staying very near 54. We were both very tanned (Florida, duh) and decided to wear Hawaiian shirts (NOT matching!) to the most celebrated disco known to Planet Earth. As we both approached the entrance, the semi-circle crowd waiting to get in, picked or noticed was huge. We both looked at each other & said NO WAY but kept walking. About 32 1/2 feet from the rope, one of the deciders yelled out...Hey, you guys come on IN and he made an opening for us to enter and BAM we were IN Studio 54, dancing, drinking and gawking at the most entertaining bartenders I had ever seen. Would it have happened on another night? Probably not, but that one experience made me feel totally superior for 1 night. My partner (one of the best natural / freestyle, white boy dancers I ever saw) said it was me...but...I really knew it was his face that parted the Red Sea. Yeah cute people.
