Thought I would share this little excerpt from my essay about Whitmans impact on spoken word culture... In the culture of spoken word exists this notion of “becoming your poem” as the psychological and physiology reactions one experiences when performing. As a spoken word artist, I have heard the notion that if you reach deep enough inside your poem, you may find the God in it and bring it inside of you. Whitman often discusses the God within himself, “Divine am I inside and out, and I make holy whatever I touch or am touch’d from, the scent of these arm-pits aroma finer than prayer, this head more than churches, bibles, and all the creeds.” (Perkins) With a dose of pantheism, Whitman develops an identity structured around the belief that in our souls is God, while spoken word, written from the soul, is structured around the belief that in a poem is God.
