Thought t oshare ..... Dorcas (Tabitha in Hebrew) Blessing the Poor with Her Talents Her Bible Story: Acts 9:36-43 Dorcas was an early member of a Christian congregation who lived in a city named Joppa. She is the only woman in the Bible to be given the title of “Disciple.” She was known for her works of charity and kindness, liberally giving of her talents, resources and skills to others. She was a talented seamstress who apparently owned her home and used it as a place to sew clothes for the poor and for the widows. She taught others to sew and do charitable works also. Dorcas died suddenly, probably in the middle of a sewing circle. Her body was laid out by the women in her group who started grieving her death. Hearing that the Apostle Peter was nearby, the women sent for him to come to the house of Dorcas. When he arrived, they showed him the beautiful clothes sewn by Dorcas for the poor and told him stories of her benevolence. Peter went in alone to pray over the dead body of Dorcas. Miraculously, Dorcas was brought back to life and presented to those gathered where she immediately returned to doing her good works. Mentoring Contemporary Women: Dorcas never sought a position but was known as a Disciple and leader in the community because of her charitable work. Business Tip: Some women are destined to lead businesses that serve the needs of the poor and downtrodden in the community. You might have an interest in being a leader of a non-profit organization or choose to start a new charitable organization to serve a specific need in your community or the world. Check with the Foundation Center in your area or online to learn about grants for funding start-up non-profit organizations or for programming, supporting fundraising events or other needs. Also look for corporate sponsorships and funding. Community people are often looking for ways to work with non-profits or charitable groups so be sure to get the word out that your organization is seeking money, volunteers and supporters.
