Thought this was interesting...US Army camps in Veedersburg near farm of Don Nixon October 12, 1921 - An Army unit on its way from Camp Grant south of Rockford, Illinois to Camp Knox in Kentucky camped for one night in Veedersburg. They pitched camp on East State Road, east of the Nickel Plate Railroad and near the farm of Don Nixon. [Click to see a larger image] Camp Grant was a training center for the 86th Division (National Army) during World War I. The camp was hit with the Spanish Flu in 1918, and about 1,000 men out of the 40,000 men there lost their lives to the epidemic. Several years after the war, the government ordered the camp closed and dismantled, for a number of reasons. Perhaps the unit shown in the photo was part of an early move to new headquarters at Camp Knox. So they did what armies did back then when they had to get from point A to point B—they marched or rode in wagons—a jaunt of nearly 450 miles. The wheeled contraption in the center of the photo is an army kitchen. I am curious to determine the military unit pictured here. The notation at the bottom of the photo appears to say 600 U.S A.S. I couldnt find any such unit at the time. Or perhaps it means 600 US Army Soldiers.
