Thoughts on Lou Reed. This might be edited later to reflect more of my feelings. But Reed was a misogynistic asshole who also happened to be a musical genius. Read Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil for that confirmation. The Velvet Underground birthed an entire music scene that would later become punk rock. A vehicle for a former Chelsea girl, Nico. With help from Andy Warhol, they released the Banana record, which inspired Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls, The Ramones, just to name a few. If there was ever a person who I wanted to see perform in a tiny club,it was Lou. When I saw Laurie Anderson at Time Based Art, I said it would be the closest I would see to Lou Reed ever performing. Sure enough, I was right. There used to be a saying: anyone who ever picked up a Velvet Underground record, started a band. Theres a lot of truth to that. I know I did. Lou wrote a line that summed my life up completely, and that was you know her life was saved by rock n roll. And it was. Rest in peace, Lou.
