Thoughts on the last 24 hours: 1. Racism is not a crime. Its ugly and vile - but its not a crime. You are within your rights to hate Race X, Y or Z for any reason you choose - just as long as you dont act on those feelings and discriminate, e.g., denying someone employment, entrance to a public place of business, etc. 2. Racism exists in ALL races. 3. Comparing racism to rape or child molestation, (as some have suggested), is patently absurd. Racism - in and of itself - is nothing more than a nasty, stupid thought. 4. Nothing Donald Sterling said is prosecutable or punishable by law. However . . . 5. Words have consequences. The NBA is a private organization with bylaws. They were completely within their rights to punish Sterling as they saw fit. I see nothing wrong with their decision. If I was running a business and one of my employees was publicly spewing racist nonsense or anything else that was bad for my business - I would fire them on the spot. And on a side note here - dont think for a minute the NBA is taking the moral high-ground here. It was a business decision - pure and simple. Professional sports always does whats best for business - which is why Michael Vick wasnt banned for life, (which he should have been). Whats worse, asking your girlfriend to stop hanging around black people or killing dogs? Ill give you a hint. One is just stupid words. Moving on . . . 6. While sordid, how the information got to the public is irrelevant. Once its out, you cant un-ring the bell - which leads me to my next point. 7. Dont tape anything, post anything, email anything that you arent willing to live with publicly. This is the world we now live in. 8. I am torn. Equal parts unhappy & happy. Unhappy that we are turning into a nation of PC, pussy, hall monitors - and happy that the hall monitors caught someone like Sterling red-handed. Wait. Is red-handed a racist remark? No doubt to someone.
