Thoughts on the movie Jesus of Nazareth: The Raising of Lazarus From Death. Next to Jesus own resurrection, the raising of Lazarus from the dead four days after he died, and his body was already decaying in the tomb, proved indeed to be Jesus greatest miracle during His three year ministry in the land of Israel. The miracle indubitably proved that Messiah Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. For its one thing to claim you have power of life over death, and its another thing to prove it. And Jesus did this here for our salvation which points to His own resurrection from the dead! Both Martha and Mary express their regret that if Jesus had been there Lazarus would not have died--as if to imply once death happens there is nothing Jesus can do since no one can overcome the power of death once it has happened. That is why Jesus had to not only tell them but demonstrate to them and the crowd that He as the Prince of Life is the resurrection and the life whose power to impart eternal life and conquer death was to be demonstrated here with the raising of Lazarus from the dead. In this miracle our Lord Jesus shows Gods power to give life, restore life, and speak life to conquer death and raise the dead with resurrection life is greater than the power of death itself. When Jesus is on the verge of doing this, Zeffirelli has the apostle John quote from Jonah 2:6 where Jonah is praising God He had brought him back from the threshold of death. Again, the allusion to Jonah here is not coincidental; it undoubtedly reminds us of how Yeshua used Jonahs internment in the belly of the whale for three days as a type and prophetic figure pointing to His death and burial for thee days and then His resurrection from the tomb never to die again (Matthew 12:40). The raising of Lazarus is another type and shadow of what Yeshua will do when He returns to raise the believer from the dead at the Rapture. Death is at the Lord Jesus command. When He speaks life to the dead--death must surrender to the Author of life!. In the movie when Jesus does raise Lazarus from death, there is a far shot in the scene where you see the clouds on the nearby hill next to Lazarus tomb flee away and dissipate with penetrating sunlight-- as if to suggest nature itself is saying here death for the believer in Jesus the Messiah is but a fleeting shadow that will permanently disappear and passover when Jesus, the light of the world returns to raise His people from death! Enjoy the powerful reenactment of the miracle of Lazarus being raised from death as depicted in the cinematic masterpiece Jesus of Nazareth.
