Thousands turn out for Gasparilla Childrens Parade, festivities in Tampa - TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Thousands braved the cool temperatures and brisk winds along Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa for the annual Gasparilla Childrens Parade and Extravaganza today. Some parade goers make it a yearly trek. For others like Nathaniel Northey, it is a new adventure. Its my first time here, Northey said. Its really fun. Im here to support my brother. ... Hes on a float, and hes here for cheer. Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor was in one of the lead patrol cars as the parade kicked off at 3:30 p.m. at Bayshore and Bay-to-Bay. Beads hung from the patrol cars drivers side and passenger side rear view mirrors. Castor tells News Channel 8 the joke among her officers is she better not run out of beads. Thats what one of the sergeants said: If the chief runs out of beads, no matter what I do, Ive lost my job, Castor said. Mayor Bob Buckhorn also was loaded down with beads and having a time of it. The mayor tells News Channel 8 he is having a blast, but this event is all about the kids. Its exciting for me, but not as exciting as it is for these kids, Buckhorn said. They love this event.
