Three Questions and a Slap When the angel Jibreel (alaihis salam) came to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) disguised as a bedouin and asked him about Eeman (faith), he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) responded: “To believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in Qadr (Divine Preordainment - fate), the good of it and the bad of it.” [Muslim] A young man, confident of his indefeasibility, challenged a Muslim scholar with three questions: 1. Does God exist? If so, show me His shape. 2. What is Qadr (fate)? 3. If Satan was created from fire, why will he be thrown into hell? It certainly won’t hurt him if hell is also fire. Didn’t God think of this? Suddenly, the scholar slapped the young mans face very hard. Young Man (in pain): Why did you do that? Scholar: The slap is my answer to your three questions. Young Man: I really dont understand! Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you? Young Man: I’m in pain, of course. Scholar: So you believe that pain exists? Young Man: Yes. Scholar: Show me the shape of that pain! Young Man: I can’t. Scholar: That is my first answer. All of us feel Gods existence without being able to see His shape. Scholar: Last night, did you dream that you will be slapped by me? Young Man: No. Scholar: Did you ever think that you will get a slap from me today? Young Man: No. Scholar: That is Qadr (fate). Scholar: My hand that I used to slap you, what is it made of? Young Man: It is made of flesh. Scholar: How about your face, what is it made of? Young Man: Flesh. Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you? Young Man: Sore! Scholar: Even though both Satan and hell were created from fire, hell will be a very painful place for Satan.
