Three men, from Japan, Russia, and the United States, sat in a cramped capsule streaking across the skies of Kazakhstan at unimaginable speeds as the winds and fire outside threatened to tear them apart. We certainly have harnessed the forces of nature enough that this dramatic situation is reasonably survivable, but the reality exists that every flight is still a miracle in some sense. Ive been happily shocked by the number of people Ive seen posting about the International Space Station lately. Even lots of people from back home that I wouldnt even think are remotely interested in science. Its exciting to see everyone getting excited about space. Yet despite the reposts of links of live HD video streams of Earth or interesting experiments taking place onboard, I see less than five posts on my newsfeed about the three human beings who just returned to Earth from six months in space...and my newsfeed is saturated with people who work in the aerospace industry. It might show up in the ticker at the bottom of the screen of a news channel, probably filtered through lens of current geopolitics that makes this international endeavor marginally connected to the diplomatic crisis. Certainly not for the real, human drama of the adventure. Every flight is a story with real people, both onboard or on the ground making the magic happen. TL;DR I wish everyone was as excited about spaceflight as I am and I miss journalism.
